Training Winners / The Curragh

The Beginning

Paul Green set up training in his own right at Oaklea Racing Stables in 2007after serving as assisant trainer to D Evans at the same yard.  Paul's passion is to pick bloodstock, mainly yearlings, at the various sales and then break them in.  He had bought an Invincible Spirit Colt (Invincible Force) from the Fairyhouse sales in Ireland for a friend Terry Cummins - who incidentally had constructed the gallops at Oaklea for Paul and his previous business partner.  "Vinnie" was gelded shortly after purchase.   Paul used "Vinnie" as his project to help him gain his NVQ3 and later apply for his own trainers license.  The aim was to run him in the Tattersalls Sales Race at the Curragh the following August 2006 which he won impressively much to the delight of Terry and his family, who originate from Castle Dermott , "his parents and other family members still live there"!

Whilst conquering the Curragh Paul was already looking forward to buying further yearlings from the same sales and purchased a Modigliani filly (Sudden Impact).  She was also focused on running in the same sales race the following year2007 and again she was owned by Terry Cummins who by this time had fused such a good friendship with Paul.

Bringing on this filly was another challenge for Pauland at this time had no idea that he could make dreams come true a second time for the Cummins clan.  As she was a poor traveller Paul decided to take a companion "6 yr old Mare Jilly Why", a 5 fl sprint was the answer and so he entered her just on the off chance.

At this time it seemed that the whole of Ireland and indeed all at Oaklea and the surrounding area were watching.  The race was off and Paul, Terry and enterage were watching with baited breath as Sudden Impact mimicked Invincible Forces race the year earlier.  With great gusto she stormed through the pack, again with Fran Berry in the saddle .  She won impressively, all involved were dancing, singing ,hugging and kissing - the air electric with dissbelief - again a winner of the prestigious Tattersalls Sales Race 300.000 Euro.

DREAMS REALLY DO COME TRUE!!

Then to Jilly Why's race: The race was off and Jilly tucked in nicely from the off, just at the 2 fl mark a gap opened op for her - just like the parting of the waves - or so it felt! she stormed home and took the trophie.  "Not bad for a travelling companion!". Celebrations didn't stop till early hours as you can imagine.
